This afternoon, Wednesday September 4, 2013, at 2:20 p.m., deputies from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office were at a residence in the 100 block of Southeast 31st Avenue to serve civil papers on a 50-year-old man. From inside the residence, the deputies heard what they believed to be a single gunshot fired.

Central Precinct officers responded to the scene and after an initial assessment, on-duty personnel assigned to the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) responded to safely approach the residence. Officers from the Mobile Crisis Unit (MCU) also responded as they were familiar with the resident.

SERT officers were able to get a view inside the residence and could see a man down with an apparent gunshot wound.

Officers entered the residence and along with medical personnel confirmed that the 50-year-old man was deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Nobody else was inside the apartment and there were no other injuries reported.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy and notify family.

Neighborhood traffic was briefly affected by this incident.
