This afternoon, Saturday October 5, 2013, at 2:55 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to the 1500 block of Southeast 41st Avenue on the report of a car that crashed through a fence, hit a house and ruptured the gas main.

Officers along with firefighters from Portland Fire & Rescue responded and determined that it was a single vehicle crash with no injuries.

The vehicle came to rest on top of the gas main and natural gas is leaking into the air and surrounding neighborhood.

Southeast 41st Avenue is closed to all traffic from Hawthorne Boulevard to Clay Street.

Emergency crews from Portland General Electric (PGE) and Northwest Natural Gas are responding to address the gas leak.

Officers have evacuated some residents close to the scene.

The street closure likely will be in place for several hours as crews work to contain the problem.

A preliminary crash investigation indicates that the driver's foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

Updates will be provided as they become available.
