###ORIGINAL MESSAGE BELOW###

Southwest Barbur Boulevard reopened to all traffic at approximately 6:00 p.m. after a deadly crash this afternoon.

The Traffic Division's Major Crash Team has conducted a preliminary investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary information indicates that a 2006 Ford Freestyle mini-van was traveling southbound on Barbur Boulevard and suddenly crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic, striking a northbound 2012 International dump truck head-on. The dump truck belongs to the City of Portland Water Bureau and was driven by a 49-year-old male employee who was not injured in the crash.

The impact pushed the mini-van to the West shoulder of the roadway where it caught on fire. The City of Portland employee and at least one other witness tried to pull the mini-van driver from the burning wreckage but were not able to save the driver who died at the scene.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy and work to identify the driver on Tuesday.

The City of Portland employee was not impaired by drugs or alcohol and cooperated with the investigation.

No citations have been issued and no names will be released until after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact Officer Erik Koppang at (503) 823-2216 or erik.koppang@portlandoregon.gov.
