Special Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are assisting the Portland Police Bureau and Portland Fire & Rescue with this investigation.

The Metropolitan Explosives Disposal Unit (MEDU) was able to render the small improvised explosive device safe.

The area is now clear and all streets are open.

The Bomb Squad has destroyed the device and is now processing the scene for evidence. Arson Investigators from Portland Fire & Rescue are responding to assist with the investigation.

The area is expected to remain closed for approximately another hour.

This morning, Tuesday November 26, 2013, at 10:34 a.m., East Precinct officers responded to the Montavilla United Methodist Church, located at 232 Southeast 80th Avenue, on the report of a suspicious device found by an outside dumpster.

Officers arrived and, after a preliminary examination of the device, called for the Metropolitan Explosives Disposal Unit (MEDU) to respond to the scene.

Area traffic is affected from Southeast 80th to 81st Avenues, Pine to Stark Streets. No evacuations are being done at this time.

Additional updates will be provided when they become available.
