Today, Tuesday January 14, 2014, at approximately 12:00 p.m., East Precinct officers and Robbery detectives arrested 33-year-old Tiffany Denise Smith in connection with two incidents where she stole purses from older women. Smith was arrested at Southeast 130th Avenue and Division on an unrelated arrest warrant out of Clackamas County.

This investigation began on Tuesday January 7, 2014, at 2:39 p.m., when East Precinct officers responded to a residence in the 2100 block of Southeast 148th Place on the report of a strong-arm robbery and learned that the suspect grabbed an 89-year-old woman's purse and threw her to the ground.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned of a December 2013 incident where a suspect knocked on the door of a Southeast Portland home in the 4800 block of Southeast Henderson Street, pushed passed the 90-year-old woman who answered the door, stole her purse off of the dining room table, then ran back out the front door. The victim in this case did not call 9-1-1 and waited until the next day to call police.

Detectives are continuing to investigate other cases with similarities to see if the suspect was involved in any additional crimes.

Smith will be booked into the Multnomah County Jail later this evening on several charges including Robbery, Assault, Burglary and Identity Theft.
