The investigation into last night's crash is continuing today.
The pedestrian killed on Southeast Division Street has been identified as 46-year-old Angelo Elton Tupper.
Investigators learned that a white 2013 Mercedes C250, driven by 43-year-old Ted Chu, was traveling eastbound on Division Street in the right lane. The driver told police that, without warning and at the last second, he saw Tupper lying in the roadway. Chu was unable to swerve in time and struck Tupper in the road, then immediately stopped.
Chu cooperated with investigators and was not under the influence of intoxicants.
Investigators do not know why Tupper was lying in the roadway. Investigators learned that Tupper was at a nearby lounge prior to the crash. There is no information on Tupper being hit by a different vehicle prior to Chu and the investigation is continuing into the cause and manner of Tupper's death.
Southeast Division Street was closed for approximately 3 hours as officers investigated the crash.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Officer Peter Kurronen at (503) 823-2208 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
This was the first traffic fatality of 2014.
