GirlStrength and WomenStrength New Instructor Graduation Ceremony (Photo)

GirlStrength and WomenStrength, Violence Prevention Programs operated through the Family Services Division of the Portland Police Bureau, will hold their annual graduation ceremony on Wednesday April 30, 2014, to recognize volunteers who have completed the programs intensive new instructor training.

GirlStrength and WomenStrength instructors are all unpaid volunteers who complete 128 hours of education on a range of topics including violence prevention, self-defense tactics and personal safety options.

The graduates professional training prepares them to empower girls and women with life-saving skills and information. Post-graduation these instructors will collectively donate thousands of volunteer hours teaching classes and workshops in the community.

The graduation ceremony will be held Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the Portland Police Bureau's Central Precinct.

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales, Commissioner Amanda Fritz, and Portland Police Bureau Assistant Chief Donna Henderson are expected to be in attendance.

The keynote address will be delivered by Jocelyn Hollander, Ph.D., Sociology Department Head at the University of Oregon.

Members of the media are welcome to attend by pre-arrangement.

Founded in 1979, WomenStrength has provided personal safety workshops and classes to over 100,000 people in the Portland metro area. GirlStrength is in its sixth year of operation and has provided self defense training to over 4,500 girls and young women. All classes and workshops are provided to the public free of charge.

With proven success in educational outreach, GirlStrength and WomenStrength were recently funded by the City of Portland to launch a new companion program, BoyStrength. New instructor training for the BoyStrength program will begin in June 2014 with classes slated to begin shortly thereafter.
