###ORIGINAL MESSAGE BELOW###
This morning, Saturday May 10, 2014, at 2:23 a.m., at Northwest 2nd Avenue and Burnside Street, a man stepped into the traffic lanes of West Burnside and was struck by a marked Portland Police car driven by a Central Precinct officer.
After the collision, the officer immediately called for medical personnel to respond to treat the man, an adult male, who appeared to be suffering traumatic injuries.
Medical personnel transported the man to a Portland hospital where he remains recovering from injuries and an apparent heroin overdose. He is expected to survive.
All westbound lanes of West Burnside were closed and the Traffic Division's Major Crash Team responded to conduct the investigation.
Preliminary investigation, and information from witnesses, indicates that the police officer was driving eastbound on Burnside Street, with a green light, when the man stepped from the curb into the street and was hit by the patrol car.
The police car was towed for further investigation and the street was reopened to all traffic at approximately 5:15 a.m.
