Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division Receives largest Grant in 90-Year History
Walmart Foundation grant will help the Sunshine Division feed local families

PORTLAND, Ore. (Aug. 14, 2014) - This week, uniformed officers and staff of the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division accepted a check for $60,000 from the Walmart Foundation--the largest single year grant in its 90-year history. The grant will help the Sunshine Division with warehouse staff, equipment and space support to streamline operations and improve its food distribution efforts throughout the Portland metro area.

"For an organization of our size, a grant of this magnitude will enable Sunshine Division to significantly help more people in less time with better resources." said Sunshine Division's assigned Portland Police Officer, Officer Phil Kent. "We've had an ongoing partnership with Walmart stores who have helped us feed and clothe families at the local level, we value the evolution of this partnership with such an impactful grant from the Walmart Foundation."

The check presentation took place on Wednesday at a Portland-area store opening in Tigard. As part of the festivities, Portland Police officers, Sunshine Division staff and Walmart Associates recognized the important role each group plays in making our region a great place for all of our neighbors to live.

In advance of the celebration, Walmart's senior vice president and regional general manager Madeleine Havener noted that this historic grant is important to all area residents, "Part of our core mission is to help people live better and together the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division and Walmart are doing exactly that. We're proud to support the Bureau's food distribution efforts and help get nutritious meals to our neighbors in need."

The Sunshine Division, a 90- year old nonprofit which partners closely with the Portland Police Bureau, has a strong commitment to feeding and clothing people in need while remaining as fiscally efficient as possible. For years the organization has maintained an unusually high efficiency rating with over 93% of every dollar directed toward free programs serving Portland area's vulnerable populations and partnerships with area hunger relief agencies. CharityNavigator has rated the Sunshine Division with a 4-out-of-4 star rating two years in a row, outranking other local hunger relief agencies and ranking among the top 15% of all nonprofits nationally. The rating indicates low overhead and fundraising costs with high levels of effectiveness in mission and transparency in sharing where the funding goes.
