05/06/2016 Operation Safe Spring: 51 Arrests, 17 Firearms Seized in Effort to Reduce Gang and Gun Violence (Photo)

The Portland Police Bureau, in partnership with the Multnomah County Department of Community Justice (DCJ) conducted Operation Safe Spring for two weeks in April 2016 in response to ongoing gang and gun violence in the City of Portland.

The results of this effort will be discussed at today's Community Peace Collaborative meeting at 10:00 a.m. The meeting is held at North Precinct, located at 449 Northeast Emerson Street.

The Bureau's Gang Enforcement Team (GET) was assisted by North Precinct, the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), the Air Support Unit (ASU), the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, the United States Attorney's Office -- Oregon, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).

More than three dozen officers, sergeants and detectives worked for 14 days, from April 7 to April 20, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.

The focus of Operation Safe Spring was to reduce gang and gun violence and increase community safety.

A total of 51 people were arrested during Operation Safe Spring on a variety of charges including Attempted Aggravated Murder, Assault in the First Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and numerous State and Federal warrants.

Officers served search warrants on 12 people, 4 residences and 5 vehicles.*-..

05/05/2016 68-Year-Old Man Arrested for Shooting at Egg-Throwers in Southeast Portland (Photo)

On Thursday May 5, 2016, at 1:41 a.m., East Precinct officers responded to a residence in the 6000 block of Southeast Mitchell Street after the caller reported firing a gun at people in a Ford Taurus in front of his house after the occupants threw eggs at the home.

Officers arrived in the area and contacted the resident, 68-year-old William Dean Thomas, and took him into custody without incident.

Earlier in the evening, officers took a phone report from Thomas about his home being egged.*-..
