Stone’s body was discovered on February 7, 1998, in the 4700 block of Northeast 14th Avenue where he died from a single gun shot wound. In the months preceding his death, Stone was in the process of turning his life around. He had found full-time employment and was a new father when his life was tragically cut short. Detectives believed Stone had associates who were gang affiliates and that Stone was in the processes of distancing himself from those associates when he was murdered.
Investigators from the Cold Case Squad spent months trying to convince reluctant witnesses to come forward with information regarding Stone’s death. Through an intensive investigation and the cooperation of several key witnesses, investigators were able develop new leads which led to a Grand Jury Indictment for the arrests of Benton and Moreland. “The Cold Case investigators worked incredibly hard on this case, as they do all cases,” said Sergeant Svilar of the Cold Case Squad, “And I commend the witnesses for having the courage to come forward and help solve this senseless murder.” Cold Case Squad investigators have solved 7 homicides since the inception of the Squad in January 2005.
Investigators encourage members of the community with information regarding this case or any other case to contact Detective Paul Weatheroy at (503) 823-0458, or Detective Cheryl Kanzler at (503) 823-0457.
This investigation is ongoing.
