On Sunday, October 29, 2006, at 6:06 am, two Northeast Precinct officers pulled a 26-year-old suicidal man off of the exterior ledge of the Fremont Bridge. The incident began when dispatch received information that someone was walking on the bridge. In response to the call, an officer parked his patrol car on top of the bridge and walked the span locating the unconscious man on the exterior ledge. Because the man was so close to the ledge, officers decided to attempt to remove him without waking him up.
Officers called for the assistance of the Portland Fire Bureau who provided the officers with rope harnesses and safety gear. The officers then jumped over the railing, placed a safety harness around the man and pulled him to safety.
The man was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. When officers contacted him he was thankful to be alive.
