WASHINGTON RESIDENT DIES IN FATAL ACCIDENT

On January 11, 2002, at 2:20 a.m., Portland Police responded to a report of a vehicle into the Columbia River near the 7200 block on Northeast Marine Drive. Dead at the scene was 76-year-old Joseph Bechard of Battleground, Washington.

At the scene, investigators learned that Bechard was Westbound on Northeast Marine Drive when he passed a witness and continued Westbound. Shortly after passing the witness vehicle, Bechard’s vehicle made a sudden and erratic turn toward the Columbia River. Bechard’s vehicle then plunged into the river.

No other person was injured during this single car accident. This investigation is continuing.
