On March 6, 2002, Homicide Detectives arrested 48year-old Peni A. Lavigne for Abuse of a Corpse and Child Neglect in the First Degree in connection with a death investigation that started with the discovery of the body of 37-year-old John Paul Espinoza. On February 5, 2002, Portland Police discovered Espinoza’s body at an apartment complex, at 2524 SE 12th Avenue, during a welfare check. An autopsy revealed that Espinoza had died of a heroin overdose.

Investigators learned that Espinosa had overdosed in an apartment occupied by Lavingne. Lavingne then dragged Espinosa’s body out of the apartment and on to a landing. A 7-year-old child, who had been left in Lavinge’s custody, witnessed the two adults inject heroin, then watched Lavigne drag the body out of the apartment. During an interview, the child described seeing several adults inject heroin at Lavigne’s apartment.

A photograph of Lavigne is available via e-mail from the Portland Police Bureau Identification Division by calling (503) 823-0382.
