22-YEAR-OLD MAN DIES IN EARLY MORNING COLLISION

December 26, 2006 00:00

On Tuesday, December 26, 2006, at 6:39 a.m., Portland Police were dispatched to the 13800 block of Southeast Powell Boulevard to investigate a vehicle collision between a TriMet bus and a motor vehicle. Officers arrived on the scene and found the driver of the vehicle, 22-year-old Modesto Hernandez-Hernandez, with serious neck and leg injuries. Hernandez-Hernandez was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died.

Traffic Investigators believe the collision occurred when Hernandez-Hernandez, who was driving a maroon 1997 Plymouth Breeze eastbound on Powell Blvd, crossed into the westbound lanes and into the path of the TriMet bus. The bus was carrying approximately 15 passengers at the time of the collision; one passenger was transported to a local hospital with neck pain. Hernandez-Hernandez was the only occupant of his vehicle.

There is no evidence that either driver was impaired at the time of the collision; investigators preliminarily believe the cause to be weather- related.

This investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Kevin Felts at (503) 823-2103.
