OFFICER SHOOTS AT SUSPECT AS HE IS POINTING A HANDGUN AT POLICE OFFICERS
On Thursday, December 28, 2006, at 1:16 am, in the 4300 block of North Montana Street, a 56-year-old, 12-year member of the Portland Police Bureau fired two rounds at a suspect who was pointing a handgun at several officers. The investigation began about one hour earlier when an adult woman and two teenage girls went to an apartment complex in the 4300 block of North Montana Street to drop off one of the girls. While they were at the complex, a man exited a nearby apartment and pointed a handgun at one of the teenage girls. They immediately fled the apartment complex and notified police.
Officers arrived and were in the process of attempting to contact the suspect when they saw the door to the suspect’s apartment open and then saw someone point a handgun at the officer’s through the open door. The officer nearest the gun dropped to the ground as a second officer shot at the person holding the handgun. The suspect was not hit by the officer’s bullets and the officer’s were not injured. A short time later, a woman, child, and the suspect exited the suspect’s apartment and were taken into custody. SERT was called to clear the apartment and a .380 caliber semi automatic handgun was eventually recovered from the suspect’s apartment.
Homicide Detectives and investigators from the East County Major Crimes Team were called in to conduct the investigation. Detectives have not positively identified the suspect and his name will be released as soon as he is booked into jail.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Molly Dahl at (503) 823-0991 or Detective Barry Renna at (503) 823-0255.
