On Tuesday evening, February 20, 2007, several Portland Area restaurants and bars will be celebrating “Fat Tuesday”. Historically, these events have drawn a large number of citizens into Downtown Portland.
This year, Portland Police will have a substantial and highly visible presence in Downtown Portland throughout the evening. The Portland Police Traffic Division will be vigorously looking for individuals who attempt to drive while under the influence of alcohol. In prior years, Portland Police Officers have had to intervene in numerous fights, and received a number of complaints from women—especially teenage women—stating that they were touched inappropriately while on public streets or sidewalks. Disorderly conduct or other behavior that detracts from the livability of our community will not be tolerated.
The Curfew Ordinance will be enforced and the Portland Police Bureau will be working with New Avenues For Youth, TriMet, Central City Concern and other agencies to protect citizens who are attending various events. Police are advising participants to be aware of problems associated with being overly intoxicated, and to have designated drivers or other transportation available when consuming alcohol. If a minor, be cautious due to the fact that in previous years, teenage women were especially targeted for inappropriate physical contact.
Additional questions can be directed to Central Precinct Commander Mike Reese at (503) 823-0097.
