On Friday, June 8, 2007, Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detectives were notified of the death of 29-year-old Justin Hawkins, who died at Portland Adventist Hospital while receiving treatment for injuries sustained during a fight. Until the time of Hawkins death, neither the Police Bureau nor the Bureau of Emergency Communication was informed of this life-threatening assault. Detectives contacted family and friends of the deceased and learned that on June 1, 2007, Hawkins was assaulted by one, or more than one individual, at a residence in Portland. At the time of the assault, Hawkins did not immediately call police or seek medical attention for his injuries.
By June 7, 2007, pain from the injuries became so intense that Hawkins sought medical attention at Portland Adventist Hospital where he died the next day. On June 9, 2007, the Multnomah County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and determined that Hawkins died of complications from blunt force trauma.
Detectives continued the investigation and on Sunday, June 10, 2007, arrested 34-year-old Chad Dinger and 43-year-old Enzell Bowler on one count of Murder. Both are currently lodged in the Justice Center Jail.
This investigation has been complicated by the fact that the crime was not immediately reported to police; therefore, investigators were unable to immediately process the crime scene. Detectives are seeking information from anyone who may have had contact with the suspect or victim in the days between June 1, 2007, and June 7, 2007.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Ken Whattam at (503) 823-0696 or Detective Cheryl Kanzler at (503) 823-0457. This investigation is continuing. ###PPB###
