On November 30, 2007, bring two items of food for the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division at America’s Largest Christmas Bazaar and receive free admission. Every year, this one-day collection brings in more than 16,000 pounds of food (that’s 80 barrels!) for the Sunshine Division to distribute to those in need.
America’s Largest Christmas Bazaar opens the day after Thanksgiving at the Portland Expo Center with more than 1,000 booths filled with different gift ideas and holiday décor. Now in its 23rd year, the Bazaar runs two consecutive weekends, November 23, 24 and 25 and November 30, December 1 and December 2. Doors will open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays then 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday’s. Admission is $6.50 for adults and $3.25 for youth (12-17), and kids under 12 are free.
This year, food is desperately needed because the Sunshine Division is giving out 50% more food this year than in year’s past. In the month of August, the Sunshine Division distributed 80% more food than in the same month of 2006. The agency is very low on food compared to previous years.
This holiday season, to address the growing need for emergency food, the Sunshine Division will create and deliver more holiday food boxes than ever before. With the help of hundreds of volunteers, they will create and deliver 4,000 holiday boxes, complete with everything a family would need to make a traditional holiday meal. America's Largest Christmas Bazaar, will help generate enough food to fill food boxes for almost 600 families.
Some of the Sunshine Division's most needed items include: peanut butter, protein (canned tuna, chicken, etc.), boxed dinners, canned vegetables and fruits and pasta and rice.
If you know someone that needs help please contact the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division at 503-823-2102 or after hours the non-emergency number 503-823-3333.
