Provided by trained AARP volunteers, regular VITA center operations for the 2008 income tax season will begin in earnest Saturday, February 2nd, and conclude April 15th, 2008. Clients are required to make an appointment by signing up the day of, and bring W-2 and/or ITIN tax forms and identification. Saturday February 2, 2008 sign-ups for appointments begin at 8:30 a.m. and again at 12:30 p.m. Appointments for tax preparation begin at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. In 2005, the U.S. Department of Justice and the IRS partnered to establish Volunteer Income Tax Assistance centers in communities across the country. VITA Centers launched in January 2006 and processed more than 11,000 returns worth more than $15 million in total tax refunds. These centers provide free tax assistance and filing at no cost for working individuals and families. The VITA Tax Aide centers also work to promote the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credits, which can significantly increase the amount of tax returned to families.
