PAL Keeps Youth Active and Safe

PAL COMMITS TO KEEPING YOUTH ACTIVE AND SAFE OFFERS LOW-COST SUMMER PROGRAMS AND JOBS FOR YOUTH The Police Activities League (PAL) of Greater Portland will kick off its Summer Camps and USDA Summer Feeding Program for 350 youth on Monday, June 23, 2008, at an energetic assembly at 9:00 a.m. at Marshall High School’s gym (3905 SE 91st Ave). Youth will arrive on buses provided by PAL from North, Northeast, and Southeast Portland neighborhoods as well as Gresham, Troutdale, and parts of Clackamas County. Speakers include local law enforcement chiefs and military personnel. All camp coaches are police officers, deputies, community volunteers and high school athletes.

Portland Public School District and Gresham-Barlow School District Nutrition Services departments will provide lunches for youth at camp as well as all summer at the PAL Youth Center (one of the open feeding sites for East County). "Thanks to our financial supporters, partners and volunteers, PAL will provide a summer of healthy activities for youth," said PAL President/CEO Maura K. Cioeta.

There are still openings in all PAL summer programs. Registration materials are available through the web page at, and click on PAL forms. Several forms have been translated into Spanish. Highlights include:

PAL Summer Sports Camp, June 23 - 27, 8:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m., boys & girls ages 8-14. Police Officers and community volunteers coach more than 14 sports. Sports that still have openings include football, soccer, martial arts and basketball. Cost is $35.

PAL Bud Monnes Youth Center Drop-In Program (424 N.E. 172nd), June 30-August 20, M-F, 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., ages 8-17; programs include: Outdoor Club, Recreation, Reading, Arts & Crafts, & Field Trips. Cost is $50 for a year membership or $25 for youth that qualify for free or reduced lunch.

National Youth Sports Program, July 7-August 1, Monday-Friday, 8:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at Portland State University, for low-income youth 10-16, provides sports instruction, educational classes, and meals. There is a $25 registration fee, and camp is open to youth throughout the metro area (including Vancouver). Some transportation is provided from the Portland area.

PAL Adventure Camps, July 7-August 15, Monday-Friday, 7:30am-11am at the PAL Youth Center (424 NE 172nd Ave) for youth ages 8-13. Six weekly themed camps focused on recreational and enrichment activities. Cost is $25 per week plus Youth Center yearly membership of $50 or $25 for those who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Free breakfast is provided from 7:30am-8am. All youth who participate in PAL Adventure camps can participate in the drop in program immediately following adventure camp until 5:30 p.m. for no additional charge.

Beaverton PAL Day Camps and drop in programs, June 16-August 15, Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm, at the Beaverton Resource Center, 12500 SW Allen Blvd. Call 503-469-9137 or drop by the Center for registration materials.
