During the month of February the Portland Police Bureau is participating in the tri-annual safety belt enforcement campaign, “Three-Flags,” also referred to as the “Click it of Ticket” campaign. The primary function of the month-long campaign is to raise awareness and compliance with safety belt laws in Oregon. During the week of February 12, 2007, the Traffic Division will also participate in a nationwide campaign called, “Child Passenger Safety Week.” This program exists to bring awareness to child passenger safety seats.
Nationwide, the leading cause of death in children 0-16 years of age is automobile crashes. The Police Bureau hopes to use Child Passenger Safety Week to bring awareness to those responsible for transporting young people. Adults may have the best intentions in the world when they transport young people. However, statistics show that approximately 83% of all child safety seats are installed incorrectly.
To learn more about the correct installation of car seats or participate in a clinic go to www.actsoregon.org.
