On the morning of January 2, 2002, Portland Police investigated 2 separate reports of shots fired in the 4300 block of SE Milwaukie Avenue. During the initial investigation, a shot struck an occupied Tri-met bus. The second shooting involved a parked vehicle. While officers were investigating the second shooting, additional shots were heard in the area. Officers were eventually able to determine that the suspect was inside an apartment of the apartment complex located at 4365 SE Milwaukie. Officers eventually evacuated the area. During the process of the evacuation, approximately 15 shots were fired directly at Portland Police Officers.

During the subsequent standoff, the Special Emergency Reaction Team deployed gas and traded gunfire with the suspect. The suspect eventually agreed to surrender, only to fight with the officers as they attempted to take him into custody. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Clayton Jasmin, has now been arrested on 4 counts of Attempt Aggravated Murder of a police officer and 2 counts of Attempt Murder. He will be lodged in the Justice Center Jail and arraigned at 2:00 p.m. on January 3, 2002.

A photograph of Jasmin will not be available until he has been processed into the Multnomah County Jail.

The officers involved in this investigation have been placed on routine administrative leave. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sergeant S. McGlaughlin at (503) 823-0395 or Detective Sergeant B. Renna at (503) 823-0255.

This investigation is continuing.
