GRAND OPENING FOR MOUNTED PATROL

January 10, 2002 00:00

On Friday, January 11, 2002, at 10:00 a.m., Portland Mayor Vera Katz, Portland Police Chief Mark A. Kroeker, the Friends of the Mounted Patrol and community leaders will join members of the Mounted Patrol Unit (MPU) in a ceremony to commemorate the grand opening of the new Mounted Patrol Equestrian Facility. Tours will be given during the grand opening ceremony.

The Portland Police Bureau Mounted Horse Patrol Unit has been in a temporary facility for the past 10 years. The new facility includes a 20,000-square-foot covered paddock, offices and stalls for horses. The facility is also the new home for the Portland Police Bureau Canine Unit.

During the planning of the new facility, the Mounted Patrol Unit, Bureau of General Services, and the Portland Development Commission sought feedback from neighborhood and business associations in the River District. Numerous local, state, and federal agencies worked together to ensure that this facility is environmentally sound and architecturally compatible with the surrounding River District.

Media parking is available on the eastside of the paddock, accessible by the road between the paddock and main building.
