VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

The victim, through dental records, has been identified as 27-year-old Thomas Jed Gavin, of Northeast Portland.

On Saturday, October 6, 2001 at approximately 3:18 a.m., 9-1-1 dispatch received a call from the 1500 block of N. Alberta. The caller reported that a suspicious odor was emanating from their home. Portland Police Officers responded and developed probable cause to believe that the source of the odor was a dead body. Officers contacted Homicide Detectives, who initiated an investigation.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., on October 6, 2001, detectives returned to the home with a search warrant. A dead body was discovered in the home. Detectives spent the remainder of the day processing the home as a crime scene.

On October 7, 2001, the case formally became a homicide investigation, when the Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined the cause of death to be from head injuries.

No arrests have been made in this case and anyone with information is requested to call the investigators listed above.

The investigation is continuing.
