The Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division and the City of Portland Office of Transportation are set to begin installation of the first three red light cameras. Installation could begin as soon as September 17, 2001. The first two cameras will be installed at the intersection of NE Sandy Boulevard and NE 39th avenue. The third camera will be installed at the intersection of East Burnside Street and SE Grand Avenue. Testing of the cameras is tentatively scheduled for the week of October 1, 2001.

The two intersections were chosen based on the number of collisions, number of complaints of red light violations, and the number of actual violations. It is the desire of the Portland Police Bureau and the City of Portland Office of Transportation that the red light cameras reduce the number of accidents and violations at these intersections.

Initial construction includes the installation of wires under the roadway. Mounting of the cameras is scheduled to occur during the last week in September. If you are interested in sending a photographer to one of the sites when the cameras are being installed contact Mary Volm at (503) 823-7785.
