On Sunday, June 23, 2002, at approximately 2:15 in the morning, a 1996 Acura Integra, driven by 21-year-old David Andrew Vaughters, of Northwest Portland, was eastbound on Market Street at what witnesses described as "a high rate of speed." The area is twenty miles per hour.

Two males, later identified as 22-year-old Baldemar Lara-Mandujano and 17-year-old Axel Josue Miranda, both of Hillsboro, Oregon, were passengers in Vaughters' vehicle.

Vaughters reportedly ran the red light at SW 4th Avenue and his vehicle was struck by a 1986 Honda Accord that was northbound on 4th Avenue. Vaughters' car went out of control and struck a traffic control pole on the northeast corner of the intersection. Vaughters' two passengers were killed and Vaughters was reportedly ejected from the vehicle. The driver of the 1986 Honda Accord, 25-year-old Jerod R. Alexander, of Southwest Portland, was not injured.

David Andrew Vaughters has been charged with Two Counts of Manslaughter and lodged in the Multnomah County Jail.

According to investigators speed and impairment (suspected alcohol), on the part of Vaughters, were factors in the crash.

The investigation is continuing.
