Officers save life of suicidal man

July 07, 2002 00:00

At 7:30 a.m. on July 7, 2002, Officers Nate Woolstein and Jason Jones were dispatched to the Fremont Bridge to locate a suicidal male. When they arrived, they saw a 30-year-old man over the railing and holding on to the bridge. The officers, who have received Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, began to negotiate with the man while additional officers closed a portion of the bridge. After 75 minutes of difficult negotiation, the officers convinced the man to climb back over the guardrail.

A short time after the man climbed over the railing, and with Officer Woolstein standing nearby, the man attempted to jump back over the bridge and into the water. Officer Woolstein immediately grabbed the subject and the subject's momentum started to carry both of them over the bridge. Additional officers, standing nearby, caught Officer Woolstein as his legs left the ground. Officer Woolstein and the subject were pulled back to safety. The subject was then taken into custody.

Witnesses at the scene credit Officer Woolstein with saving the life of the suicidal man and officers at the scene with saving the life of Officer Woolstein.
