Victim confronts carprowler armed with handgun

July 10, 2002 00:00

On July 8, 2002, Southeast Precinct Officers arrested 19-year-old Armando Rivera Cortes on one count of Robbery in the First Degree, one count of Pointing a Firearm at Another, and one count of Unlawful Entry to a Motor Vehicle after receiving a radio call of a car prowler armed with a handgun. The crime occurred at 6:18 a.m., in the 1900 block of Southeast 80th Avenue, when the 22-year-old victim confronted Cortes after discovering Cortes removing the stereo from the victim's car. Cortes, who was inside the victim's car, reportedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it towards the victim as the victim approached. The victim left and called police.

When officers arrived they found Cortes carrying a large speaker box away from the victim's car. Cortes, upon seeing the officers, fled on foot and threw the gun down as he ran. Cortes was taken into custody a short time later.

The Portland Police Bureau strongly encourages citizens to be good witnesses but not to confront suspects. Regardless of the severity of the crime, some suspects may be armed with a weapon or weapons. If you witness criminal activity, call 9-1-1 and relay the information.
