Portland man and his nephew arrested for assault and kidnap

July 19, 2002 00:00

On July 12, 2002, Portland Police arrested 43-year-old Richard Barry and his nephew, 17-year-old Adam Berry, on one count of Assault in the Second Degree and one count of Kidnap in the First Degree in connection with an assault investigation that began on July 9, 2002. After interviews with a detective on July 12, 2002, Richard Berry was lodged in the Justice Center Jail and Adam Berry, a student at Franklin High School, was lodged in the Juvenile Detention Center.

Police first contacted the victim, a 20-year-old Portland man who is a distant relative of Richard Barry, on July 9, 2002 at Providence Hospital where he had been admitted after suffering a severe beating. The victim told police he had been living in an apartment, in the 7300 block of Southeast Powell Boulvard, with his aunt and the suspects since late March 2002. According to the victim, he had been subjected to repeated beatings to his head, chest, and groin area with a bat, fists, and other weapons since moving into the apartment. The victim reported he had also been locked in a room for significant periods of time and deprived of water, food, and toilet facilities. Reportedly, the victim has required repeated medical attention for dehydration, and injuries suffered at the hands of the suspects, up to 11 times in the past few months, occasionally requiring hospitalization for serious injuries. Until the current assault, the victim had refused to contact the police because he feared retaliation.

Since learning of the assault, detectives have worked to identify witnesses. Anyone with information in this investigation is asked to call Detective George Weatheroy at (503) 823-0886. This investigation is scheduled for a Grand Jury hearing at the Multnomah County Courthouse later today.
