The investigation began on July 21, 2002, shortly before 7:00 p.m., when officers responded to a 9-1-1 call of "six to eight fighting with bats and clubs" in Northgate Park, which is in the 5700 block of North Fessenden Street. Upon arrival officers found the body of Juan D. Suarez and observed several people running from the park.
