Subject Charged in Death of 15-Month-Old Child

On August 17, 2002, Portland Police Homicide Detectives arrested and charged 21-year-old MOSES M. JAMES with One Count of Murder in connection with the death of 15-month-old Sharayiah Leanhart. James, who lived at the residence with the child, in the 2600 block of NE 7th Avenue, was acting as the child's caregiver the night she died.

Deputy State Medical Examiner, Dr. Larry Lewman, determined the cause of death was "Blunt Force Abdominal Trauma" and the manner of death was Homicide.

James, who is lodged in the Justice Center Jail, is scheduled for arraignment on August 19, 2002

Correction: The initial investigation and police reports spelled the named of the deceased Sharayeah Leanhart. The correct spelling is Sharayiah Leanhart.
