Driver dies after eluding officers

August 19, 2002 00:00

On August 19, 2002, at 3:41 a.m., Fatal Traffic Investigators initiated an investigation into a single car fatal accident in the 3500 block of Northeast 162nd Avenue. A few minutes before the accident an East Precinct Officer, on patrol near the intersection of Northeast 160th Avenue and East Burnside Street, attempted to stop a 1989 Honda for a traffic violation. The driver, later identified as 18-year-old Gerald P. Spillers, accelerated and eluded the officer. Officers began a search of the area and found the traffic crash.

A witness told officers the Honda failed to negotiate a turn and hit a wall. Spillers died on Lifeflight while en-route to Emanuel Hospital. The passenger, 18-year-old Kale Saeturn, was also transported to the hospital.

The Honda, driven by Spillers, was reported missing from a tow lot on July 25, 2002.

This investigation is continuing.
