Homicide Victim Found 200 Block NE Russell Street

September 08, 2002 00:00

On Sunday, September 8, 2002 at 2:37 in the morning, 9-1-1 received a call of loud music in the parking lot directly across from 84 N.E. Russell Street. Portland Police uniformed officers were dispatched at 2:55 a.m. and arrived at 3:02. Upon arrival, officers found a large crowd, of 300 people or more, filling Russell Street from roughly the 100 block to the 300 block. Officers attempted to communicate with the crowd to determine why they were there and if someone was in charge, but the crowd was very uncooperative.

At 3:11 a.m. officers at the scene reported hearing several gunshots in the crowd. 9-1-1 also started receiving calls that shots were fired and someone in the crowd was injured. Officers' attempts to enter the crowd continued to be unsuccessful and additional officers, including officers from other jurisdictions, were called in to assist. When officers were finally able to part the crowd and enter, in the driveway, in front of 205 N.E. Russell, they found the body of an individual, later identified as 25 year-old Anthony Duane Brown of N.E. Portland, apparently deceased from gun-shot wounds. People in the crowd reportedly scattered in all directions. An ambulance which had been standing-by, previously unable to enter the crowd, was finally able to make its way to Brown's location, determined he was deceased and took his body to the Medical Examiner's Office.

An autopsy conducted by the Medical Examiner's Office determined that Anthony Duane Brown died of gunshot wounds.

At this time investigators have no suspect or suspects in custody, and are still trying to determine why the crowd was at the location and what lead to the shooting of Anthony Brown. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Rich Austria at (503) 823-0449 or Detective Jon Rhodes at (503) 823-0459.
