PORTLAND MAN DIES IN OLD TOWN ASSAULT

On September 12, 2002, at 5:58 a.m., Central Precinct Uniform Officers were dispatched to a possible stabbing at the intersection of Northwest Broadway and West Burnside Street. Officers arrived and discovered a 37-year-old Portland resident had collapsed and was bleeding on the sidewalk. The victim was transported to OHSU where he later died. The identity of the victim has not been released.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death is scheduled for September 13, 2002. Portland Police Homicide Detectives are interviewing witnesses and have initiated a criminal investigation.

This investigation is continuing.

Update:

The victim of the Thursday, September 12, 2002, homicide in Old Town has been identified as 37-year-old Walter Frederick Russ. The Medical Examiner has determined the cause of death to be a stab wound.
