Portland resident loses $10,000 in check scam

September 20, 2002 00:00

On Tuesday, September 17, 2002, Southeast Precinct Officers contacted a 32-year-old Southeast Portland resident who had been the victim of a check scam. The victim, contacted by the suspect while attempting to sell his truck on the Internet, agreed to accept a Cashier's Check valued at almost 10,000 more than the purchase price of the truck. After receiving the check, the victim deposited it into his Credit Union account and sent the suspect a check for the difference. The victim became concerned when the suspect did not re-contact him to arrange for the shipment of his truck to Nigeria.

The Portland Police Bureau's Detective Division Fraud Detail receives hundreds of complaints each month from citizens who are the victim of Fraud. Citizens should be wary when anyone attempts to convince them to accept a check, even a Cashier's Check, for more than the purchase price of an item. Under no circumstances should any citizen complete any transaction through the mail or the Internet until they have assurance the funds have cleared their bank. Special attention should be paid when conducting financial transaction involving other countries. If you believe you may be the victim of a fraud call 9-1-1.
