Suspect sprays witnesses with flammable liquid

September 26, 2002 00:00

On Wednesday, September 25, 2002, arson investigators from the Portland Police Bureau and the Portland Fire Bureau Arson Unit arrested 32-year-old Bjarne Alex Lewis on seven counts of Arson in the First Degree, three counts of Attempted Assault in the First Degree, one count of Possession of a Destructive Device, and one count of Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree after the suspect reportedly sprayed a room and several witnesses with a flammable liquid and lit the room on fire.

The incident began after the suspect went to "JOIN," a community outreach center in the 1100 block of Southeast Oak Street, and was caught spraying a flammable liquid in a room. As witnesses attempted to stop the suspect, he sprayed them and lit the room on fire. The suspect fled on foot and was stopped by another witness. That witness then fought with the suspect as he attempted to light a homemade destructive device.

The suspect was arrested and lodged in the Justice Center Jail. Arraignment is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. today. A photograph of the suspect is available, via e-mail, from the Portland Police Bureau Identification Division at (503) 823-0382.
