On Saturday, October 26, 2002, at 1:40 a.m., 26-year-old Russell Stoneking was transported to OHSU Hospital after he dropped from the sixth floor balcony of the Vintage Plaza Hotel located in the 400 block of SW Broadway in Downtown Portland. Stoneking had warrants for his arrest and was a suspect in numerous crimes including the recent assault of a Tigard Police Officer.
The incident began late Friday night when Portland Police Officers learned that Stoneking was staying in a room on the sixth floor of the Vintage Plaza Hotel. Officers evacuated the area around Stoneking's room and at about 1:40 a.m. called Stoneking's hotel room and asked him to surrender. Stoneking, who has had access to weapons in the past, reportedly bolted from the room and attempted to escape. Officers fired less lethal, including beanbag rounds and Tazor, at Stoneking. The less lethal was not effective. One sergeant, a 40-year-old, 16-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau fired approximately one to three live rounds at Stoneking. Stoneking, who was not hit buy the bullets, reportedly climbed over the sixth floor balcony, looked down towards the floor, and let go of the railing. Stoneking landed in the lobby and was transported to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
Homicide Detectives were called to the scene to conduct an investigation. At this time investigators do not know if Stoneking was attempting to escape custody or commit suicide. The Portland Police Bureau does not have a photograph of Stoneking.
This investigation is continuing.
