On Sunday, November 17, 2002, at 4:30 in the morning, Portland Police Uniform Officers responded to a report of "shots fired" near the intersection of Northeast 22nd Avenue and Lombard Street. Upon arrival officers found evidence that several shots had indeed been fired and at least one person had been injured. Shortly thereafter, officers learned that a man, later identified as 25-year old Domingo Lee Gonzales of Portland, had been transported from the location to a hospital by private vehicle and had died.
According to investigators, Gonzales had been outside an "after hours club," at 7144 NE 22nd, where it is believed 30 to 50 people were inside. Investigators also believe Gonzales' killing may have been either gang related, or stemmed from an earlier altercation at the address.
