On Monday, December 9, 2002, Portland Police Bureau School Police, in cooperation with the School District Security Services Unit, arrested 22-year-old Mitchell Erlacher, a former contract custodian, on one count of Burglary in the Second Degree, three counts of Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, and one count of Disorderly Conduct after completing an investigation at Benson High School. The investigation began on December 6, 2002, when officers responded to a disturbance at Benson High School involving Erlacher who had been terminated on December 5, 2002. Erlacher was found on school property at the same time a widespread electrical failure occurred. Erlacher was removed from school property and the students were sent home.
During the subsequent investigation, electricians discovered several of the wires, supporting electrical and telephone services, had been severed. Erlacher was re-contacted by investigators who developed probable cause to arrest him.
This investigation is continuing.
