Suspect arrested for Attempted Murder of a Police Officer

December 27, 2002 00:00

On December 26, 2002, at 6:12 p.m., Portland Police arrested 22-year-old Christopher R. Angel on one count of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, one count of Forgery in the Second Degree, one count of Resist Arrest, one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, one count of Impersonating a Police Officer, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument after Angel pointed a loaded .38 caliber handgun at a Portland Police Officer while she was attempting to arrest him for forgery. The incident began when an East Precinct officer was dispatched to the Cash Connection located at 11902 Southeast Stark Street on a possible forgery. When the officer arrived, she saw the suspect, later identified as Angel, exiting the business. Angel attempted to convince the officer he was a Deputy Sheriff by displaying a stolen Clackamas County Sheriff's Office badge.

The officer refused to believe Angel was a police officer and attempted to restrain him from leaving. Angel began to fight with the officer. During the fight the officer deployed her baton in the hope of gaining control of Angel. As they continued to struggle, Angel pushed back, pulled out a handgun, and pointed it directly at the officer who was less than 4 feet away. The officer, believing she was about to be shot, lunged at Angel and began a fight for the handgun. Cover officers arrived shortly before the officer pried the handgun from Angel's hand. At some point during the fight, Angel successfully cocked the handgun, which discharged as officers were attempting to make it safe.

Detectives were called to the scene and conducted an investigation. Angel was lodged in the Justice Center Jail and is scheduled for arraignment at 2:00 p.m. today.
