On Sunday, March 2, 2003, at approximately 11:32 in the morning, 9-1-1 received a call that a transient male was assaulting an older female at SE 3rd and Morrison.
9-1-1 dispatched Southeast Precinct Uniform Officers to the area and broadcast descriptions of the male and female involved. Shortly thereafter, in the area of the Office Depot at SE Oak Street and MLK Boulevard, a subject with something in his hand reportedly attempted to enter a motorist's occupied vehicle. Officers saw the subject running and gave chase westbound on Stark Street from MLK Boulevard. Officers broadcast that they had a subject with a knife and requested less-lethal be dispatched to their location on SE Stark as quickly as possible; moments later, an officer broadcast that shots had been fired.
The subject who was wounded was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and is listed in stable condition. The subject's identity is still unknown.
The officers involved, per bureau policy, have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, which is being conducted by the Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detail and overseen by the Multnomah County District's Office. At this time, the officers involved have not yet been interviewed. Also, per bureau policy, the names of the officers are being withheld for 24 hours to allow them to contact their families.
The investigation is continuing.
