Police seize hallucinogenic mushrooms dipped in chocolate

March 04, 2003 00:00

During the past several weeks, the Portland Police Bureau Drugs and Vice Division has seized several pounds of psilocybin mushrooms dipped in chocolate. The seizures have lead to several joint investigations in cooperation with the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, The Port of Portland, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The chocolates are wrapped in colorful foil and appear to be candy. Each chocolate-coated mushroom has a street value of about $20.00. Psilocybin mushrooms are a Schedule 1 controlled substance and accidental consumption of them could be extremely dangerous and can lead to an overdose. Police are extremely concerned about the possibility of children mistaking the mushrooms for harmless candy.

Anyone with information about the ongoing distribution of psilocybin mushrooms or any other controlled substance should call the Drugs and Vice Division at (503) 823-0246.
