13-year-old sexually assaulted in Woodlawn Park

May 30, 2003 00:00

On Thursday, May 29, 2003, at approximately 8:53 p.m., a 13-year-old female was approached by a stranger holding a weapon, pulled into an undisclosed location in the park, and sexually assaulted. Just prior to the assault, the victim was playing in the park with a younger sibling. At this time, the suspect has been described only as an unknown black male possibly in his 20's.

Detectives are canvassing the area in the hope of finding additional witnesses. More details will be released as soon as they are available.

Anyone who may have been in Woodlawn Park, located in the area of Northeast 13th Avenue and Dekum Street, between 8:45 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Thursday evening or anyone who may have any information in this investigation is asked to call the Portland Police Bureau Family Services Division at (503) 823-0281.

Update:

On Friday, May 30, 2003, Investigators from the Portland Police Bureau Child Abuse Team arrested 15-year-old David Edward Morris Jr. on one count of Kidnap in the First Degree, one count of Sodomy in the First Degree, one count of Sex Abuse in the First Degree, and one count of Menacing in connection with a sexual assault that occurred in Woodlawn Park on May 29, 2003, and a separate attack on a 15-year-old female that occurred this morning. The arrest occurred at approximately 7:33 am when Northeast Precinct Officers responded to a call of an attempted assault by a masked subject near the intersection of Northeast 42nd Avenue and Northeast Ainsworth Street. While searching the area, officers located and arrested Morris who was in possession of a weapon.

Morris was transported to the Detective Division where Child Abuse Team investigators conducted an interview and developed probable cause to arrest Morris for the Woodlawn Park assault. Morris will be booked into the Multnomah County Juvenile Detection Center and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday, June 2, 2003.

This investigation is continuing.
