Sunshine Division distributes food to charitable agencies

June 06, 2003 00:00

Safeway has offered the Sunshine Division, a nonprofit emergency relief agency, the opportunity to receive and distribute its unsaleable Safeway Private Label food and non-food items to Portland Police Bureau Metropolitan area charitable agencies. One of the first deliveries, a 53-foot Safeway Trailer filled with 24-pallets of donations, is scheduled to arrive and be unloaded at the:

Location: Sunshine Division Address: 687 N. Thompson Street Date & Time: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 - 10:30 a.m. The donations will then immediately be distributed to other charitable agencies, including: - The Salvation Army - St. Vincent de Paul - Snow Cap (Gresham) - FISH (Southeast Portland) - William Temple House (along with other local agencies)

The Portland Police Bureau's Sunshine Division will receive and facilitate distribution of Safeway's non-perishable Private Label food donations. According to Bridget Flanagan, Safeway Director of Public Affairs, this program will not impact Safeway's involvement and support of The Oregon Food Bank and its network agencies throughout the region.

Safeway has a long history of supporting the Sunshine Division dating back to the holiday season of 1932, when Sunshine Division Food Collection Barrels were first placed in all local Safeway stores, according to Sgt. Wayne Kuechler, Commanding Officer of the Sunshine Division.

The Sunshine Division, which is known for its holiday food boxes, is a year-round relief agency. Last year, the Sunshine provided almost $1.8 Million dollars in goods and services to people in need. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Sunshine Division.

For more information, contact Sergeant Wayne Kuechler at (503) 823-2117 and/or Bridget Flanagan at (503) 657-6288.
