On the evening of Wednesday, November 20, 2002, 23-year-old Asia Renee Bell and her husband, 26-year-old Tyrone Lee James, whose birthday it was that day, along with their friend, 28-year-old Robert Milhouse, were setting on the front porch of the couple's home at 5706 N. Mississippi Avenue. Asia Bell's four children, including her seven month old son, were inside.
At just before 10:00 p.m., the three adults were still on the front porch when an unknown subject, or subjects, fired numerous shots. Asia Bell was killed, Tyrone James was wounded and permanently blinded, and Robert Milhouse was wounded but recovered. Asia Bell's children escaped injury.
Homicide Investigators, who have not yet established the motive for the shooting, have found no evidence that Asia Bell and/or Tyrone James was in anyway involved with drugs.
