On Saturday, July 26, 2003, at about at 12:30 a.m., Portland Police discovered the body of 24-year-old Robert Lee Thompson Jr. in the drivers seat of a late model red Chevrolet Impala after responding to a call of a possible injury accident on the exercise path near I-205 Southbound and Southeast Powell Boulevard. Homicide Detectives were called to the scene and initiated an investigation. Officers had been searching the area since about 12:10 a.m. when 9-1-1 dispatch received a call of a possible shooting in progress on I-205 Southbound at Southeast Stark Street.
In the original call, a witness saw an occupant of a second vehicle shooting at the occupant of a red Chevrolet Impala while both vehicles traveled Southbound on I-205 near Southeast Stark Street at a high rate of speed. Based on evidence at the scene, investigators believe the Chevrolet Impala continued Southbound on I-205 from Southeast Stark Street and left the roadway near Southeast Powell Boulevard when it drove down the embankment, back up the embankment, and then into the fence and exercise path. The vehicle was no longer visible from the freeway when it came to a rest on the exercise path.
The Medical Examiner performed an autopsy and has determined that Thompson died of a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators have not determined a motive and have no suspect information to release at this time. This is the fourteenth homicide in Portland this year.
Anyone with information in this investigation is asked to call Detective Shirley Parsons at (503) 823-0395 or Detective Barry Renna at (503) 823-0255.
This investigation is continuing.
