July 28, 2003 00:00

On Saturday, July 26, 2003, at 6:23 p.m., Portland Police arrested 32-year-old Michael McGavock, for the murder of 28-year-old Latonia McPherson, after responding to a call of a possible stabbing at 10255 Southeast Mitchell Street. As soon as officers arrived at the home they were confronted by McGavock, who was armed with a knife. Officers were forced to use a Tazor to subdue McGavock. Upon entering the home, officers found the body of Latonia McPherson. Homicide detectives were called to the scene to initiate an investigation.

A total of five children, who lived in the home with the suspect and McPherson, were taken into protective custody. On July 28, 2003 the Medical Examiner performed an autopsy and determined that McPherson died of multiple stab wounds. This is the fifteenth homicide in Portland this year.

Anyone with information in this investigation is asked to call Detective Steve Ober at (503) 823-4033 or Detective Chuck Shipley at (503) 823-0400.
