Officer Involved Shooting /SE 169th and Division

December 25, 2003 00:00

On Wednesday night, December 24, 2003, Portland Police uniformed officers and detectives were in outer Southeast Portland looking for a known individual who had been positively identified as the suspect in a number of commercial armed robberies.

The suspect was a passenger in a vehicle. He ran from that vehicle to a mobile home park, at SE 169th and Division, where he attempted to flee in a stolen car and at that point shots were fired. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation, which is being overseen by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, is being conducted by the East County Major Crime Team and Portland Police Bureau Homicide Investigators. The two officers and the supervisor, who fired their weapons, have not yet been interviewed.

The name of the decreased is being withheld pending notification of the family. The Medical Examiner's Office has scheduled an autopsy for Friday, December 26, 2003, to determine the cause of death. Per the Police Bureau's policy, the names of the officers involved will not be released for 24-hours in order to allow them to contact their families.

Detective Cheryl Kanzler and Detective Chuck Shipley are the Portland Police Bureau's lead investigators in the case.

The investigation is continuing.
