At the initial scene of the shooting, uniform officers immediately secured the scene. The primary officers involved in the shooting were separated and Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detectives responded.
Upon arriving, homicide detectives, utilizing established protocol, activated detectives from the East County Major Crimes Team to assist in the investigation. The investigation is being overseen by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. Interviews were completed with the witness officers that morning and interviews with the primary officers involved are expected to begin today.
The officers involved are 32 year-old Melissa Gray, who has been with the Police Bureau for six years, 39-year-old Paul Kennard, an eleven-year veteran, and 52-year-old Sergeant John Cordell, who has almost twenty-six years of experience with the Portland Police Bureau.
The name of the deceased is being withheld at this time pending notification of family. We anticipate releasing the information later this afternoon.
Detective Cheryl Kanzler and Detective Chuck Shipley are the Portland Police Bureau’s lead investigators in the case.
